A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the App Store
Apple sent me a very thoughtful letter last night requesting that I change Pingle to act a little more user-friendly in the absence of a network connection, in accordance with the sacred dictums of the Human Interface Guidelines.
I raged, raged against the dying of the light for a bit then decided they were right. So I’ll be adding that to version 1.04, along with a couple of other tweaks, and send it on its merry way back to Apple by Sunday night. If they keep to the same turnaround time and there aren’t any other major issues, we could be in the app store as early as Friday.
If there’s anything you really need or want to see, write it up over at our Get Satisfaction feature request page.
Pingle Beta Version 1.03 Released
Posted by robert in Uncategorized on January 30th, 2009
Version 1.03 of Pingle is now available for beta testers. If you’ve sent me your UDID, you’re a beta tester.
Download it here: Pingle beta version 1.03
The big changes are that Pingle will no longer crash or hang if Ping.FM’s icon hosting is down (like it is at this moment), and that the configured location privacy “fuzz” factor will be applied in all cases. If neither of these issues is affecting you, you may consider this a low priority upgrade.
See the Pingle Release Notes for more information.
If you’d like to test Pingle, please follow the instructions shown on the Private Beta page.
Ping.FM Maintenance May Cause Crashes
Pingle depends on Ping.FM’s image hosting farm to download service icons, and that farm is currently undergoing maintenance. So Pingle may (or may not) be crashing for you — it all depends on whether you’ve already downloaded the icons before.
I’ll get a fix out later today, but with any luck Ping.FM will be back up before then.
Updated Build of Pingle 1.02(c)

Download it here: Pingle beta version 1.02c

Pingle Crashing on Key Entry
If Pingle is crashing after you enter your Ping.FM mobile key, you can try this workaround:
- From a desktop web browser, go to http://ping.fm/key/ and get your full key. Not the short 4-or-so character mobile key, but the huge thing labeled Desktop / Web Key which looks something like this: “db0137fac819efd7bee1d705746e1312-aaa7166269″.
- On your iPhone, enter the main “Settings” application. Scroll down until you find Pingle, and click on that.
- At the bottom of the Pingle settings page, click “Maintenance”.
- Under Maintenance, click “Debug”
- Get a cup of coffee, because you’re about to spend a few minutes typing.
- At the top of the screen, there’s a text field labeled “Ping.FM App Key”. In that field, type in the key you found in Step 1.
That should allow Pingle to skip the entire “Enter your mobile key” screen and get on with the business of Pingling.
