Pingle Bookmarklet

If you’re reading something in MobileSafari and want to share it, you can do so with the Pingle bookmarklet.

A bookmarklet it basically just some Javascript code embedded into a bookmark inside your browser.  When you click on that bookmark, rather than loading a new page it will execute that Javascript.  Many social link-sharing and social networking services have bookmarklets for this purpose.  On the desktop, it’s a convenience.  On the iPhone, which has no cut-and-paste function, it’s a necessity.

There are two ways to add the Pingle bookmarklet to your iPhone’s browser.

From your Desktop

You can simply drag the following link to your bookmarks bar in Safari, then sync your iPhone.  It should now be usable from within MobileSafari.

Pingle It!

This only works if you’re synchronizing bookmarks between your desktop and iPhone, of course.

From your iPhone

My favorite Twitter client Tweetie has good step-by-step instructions on doing this from the iPhone itself.  See this guide - but where that page says “tweetie:”, you should instead type “pingle:”.

The resulting bookmark URL should look like this:

javascript:window.location='pingle:'+window.location

Using the Bookmarklet

When you’re in MobileSafari reading a page that you want to share, simply click the bookmarks icon and then select the Pingle It! bookmark.  Safari will close, then Pingle will launch and begin a new post with a shortened version of that bookmark.  (Pingle currently uses the Is.Gd short link service.)

When you’re done with your post, you can simply close Pingle and re-launch MobileSafari.  It should take you back to the page you were reading.
